The measure, named after the Georgia student killed by an illegal immigrant, requires ICE detention of undocumented migrants.
The House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act after a Venezuelan, illegally present in the U.S., killed the Augusta University student during her morning run. The murderer had been arrested in New York months earlier, but allowed to continue his case for immigration.
Representative Mike Collins of Georgia introduced the bill, which stated, “The Laken Riley Act is a key piece in our fight to restore the rule of law and get criminal illegal aliens off our streets.”
The legislation would require “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to issue detainers and take custody of illegal aliens who commit theft-related crimes, such as shoplifting“ and “allows state Attorneys General to sue the Secretary of Homeland Security for injunctive relief if immigration actions such as parole, violation of detention requirements, or other policy failures harm that state or its citizens.”
